The diamond standard was developed first in the mid 20th century and GIA was the first to set a internationally recognized diamond quality standard. The 4Cs Colour, Transparency, Cut, and Carat weight are the universal way to determine diamond quality.

Two main ways of processing Diamond 4Cs are: diamond quality can be brought into a common language, and diamond buyers can now know exactly what they were purchasing.

Color

GIA is the most well recognized grading method in the industry. The scale starts with D which is colorless and continues to Z, when color is increasing.

4 C’s of Diamonds Clarity

In 1953, Richard T. Liddicoat and colleagues established the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) diamond grading system and clarity scale. The D-to-Z scale of GIA is the industry’s most common classification system.

The assessment of diamond clarity includes evaluating the number, dimensions, reliefs, design and location of these features and how they influence the stone’s overall appearance. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

Cut – 4 C’s of Diamonds

Now, we go to the most complicated and scientific to examine the diamond cut out of all 4Cs. You need to be able to fashion a stone correctly so that its dimensions, symmetry and polish only produce the splendid return of light in a diamond.

The GIA Cut Grading System for the standard round brilliant diamond evaluates seven components. The first three, brightness, fire, and scintillation, consider the diamond’s overall face-up appearance. The remaining four, weight ratio, durability, polish, and symmetry, assess a diamond’s design and craftsmanship.

Carat Weight

Carat is the unit of measurement for the physical weight of diamonds. One carat is 0,200 grams, or 1/5 grams, and 100 marks. For comparison, in units more familiar in the United States, one carat equals 0.007 ounce avoirdupois.

All else being equal, diamond price increases with carat weight, because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable. But, depending on three other variables within a 4C: the clarity of two diamonds of similar carat weight may have very different values (and prices). It’s important to note that all 4Cs, not just carat weights, determines the worth of a diamond.
